Break of structure vs change of character
BOS describes a trend continuing; CHoCH describes the first sign that the trend's description may be changing.
Interpretive framework. Smart Money Concepts is a discretionary way of labelling price action. Definitions vary among practitioners, and nothing here proves institutional orders or a guaranteed edge. All examples use synthetic numbers.
Definitions
Break of structure (BOS): in an uptrend, price closes above the most recent confirmed swing high, extending the sequence of higher highs. In a downtrend, a close below the most recent swing low. It is a continuation label.
Change of character (CHoCH): the first break against the prevailing structure. In a downtrend, the first close above the most recent lower high. It says 'the bearish description no longer fits', not 'a bull trend has started'.
Many practitioners require a candle close beyond the level; others accept a wick. Close confirmation produces fewer, later signals and fewer wick-only fake-outs. Decide in advance.
Why CHoCH is weaker than it sounds
A single CHoCH is often followed by a return to the old trend. Treat it as a prompt to watch for a higher low, not as a reversal confirmation. A common checklist: CHoCH, then a pullback that holds above the prior low, then a BOS in the new direction.
Timeframe matters: a CHoCH on a 15-minute chart can be a routine pullback inside a daily downtrend.
Worked example
Classifying breaks in a downtrend (synthetic)
- Swings so far: LH 58.0 → LL 52.0 → LH 55.5 → LL 49.0.
- Price rallies and closes at 54.2: below 55.5, so no break — still a pullback inside bearish structure.
- Price later closes at 48.6, below the 49.0 low: bearish BOS (continuation).
- A new lower high forms at 53.0. Price then closes at 53.4, above that lower high: bullish CHoCH.
- Nothing is 'confirmed bullish' yet. You would want a higher low above 48.6 and a later close above 53.4's swing high for a bullish BOS.
BOS = continuation. CHoCH = the first crack. Neither is a forecast.
Common misconceptions
“CHoCH means the trend has reversed.”
It only means the old structure was violated once. Many CHoCHs fail and the prior trend resumes.
“Any poke above a high is a BOS.”
Under a close-confirmation rule, a wick above that closes back below is not a BOS — it may be a liquidity sweep instead.
