Trend structure and volume confirmation
Trend is a sequence of higher highs and higher lows. Volume tells you how much conviction is behind each leg.
Defining trend objectively
An uptrend is a series of higher swing highs and higher swing lows; a downtrend is the mirror. When neither sequence holds, the market is ranging, and most trend tools perform poorly there.
Mark the swing points before forming an opinion. Writing down the structure prevents the common error of reading your hopes into a chart.
What volume adds
Volume measures participation. Advances on expanding volume with pull-backs on contracting volume suggest real accumulation. Advances on shrinking volume suggest a rally running out of buyers.
Volume spikes at extremes are ambiguous on their own: they can mark capitulation lows or blow-off tops. Read them together with the candle's close and the surrounding structure.
Trend changes are processes
Reversals usually unfold over several sessions: momentum slows, a swing low breaks, a lower high forms. Waiting for that sequence costs you some of the move and removes a great many false signals.
Worked example
Diagnosing a weakening uptrend
- Swing lows: 40, 44, 47 — rising. Swing highs: 48, 53, 54 — still rising, but the last advance was only 1 point.
- Volume on the leg to 54 was 30% below the average of the prior two advances.
- Price then breaks the 47 swing low on volume 1.8x average.
- The next rally stalls at 51, forming a lower high.
- Higher-high/higher-low structure is broken: the uptrend has ended, and price is at best ranging.
Fading volume on advances is a warning; a broken swing low plus a lower high is the confirmation.
Common misconceptions
“One down day breaks the uptrend.”
Trend is defined by swing structure. Single sessions rarely change it.
“High volume means the price will go up.”
Volume is directionless. It measures participation; the candle and structure supply the direction.
